This isn’t the last song
There’s no violin
The choir is quiet
And no one takes a spin
It’s the next to last song, and that’s all…

Last week I made Danny watch Lars Von Trier’s beautiful Dancer In the Dark, which stars quirky Icelandic songstress Björk as the doomed Selma Jeskova and won Best Actress as well as the Palme D’Or at Cannes in 2000. I saw it in theaters and absolutely loved it. It’s certainly not an easy film — halfway through, during a particularly upsetting scene, Danny asked if we could turn it off (I ignored him) — but I think it’s beautiful and haunting. That said, I know there are people out there who loathe it and I can understand why.

The movie is about a Czech immigrant who has moved to America in order for her son to have an operation that will cure him of the genetic disease that is slowly turning her blind. Her life is difficult, but when things get hard she imagines that she’s in a musical, because “in a musical, nothing dreadful ever happens.” Except in this one, which is devastating.
